Here is an excerpt, written by Chairman, Jon Whowell, from the CAMRA on-line magazine “Tiny Pint”:-

Well we are back and it’s all my fault we have
been away for so long.
Since we have been away, we held another
very successful Beer Festival and plans are afoot,
subject to CAMRA
approval, to
gather again at the
County Museum in
Oakham 27th June
to 30th June. Dave
Casewell will
be delighted to
accept volunteers
on the build up and take down and at the event
itself, you can get him on
secretary@rutlandcamra.org.uk
We had our AGM and sadly for the membership
I was nominated and accepted to be Chairman
for another year. I’m pleased to say that the
Committee is as per usual but Dave Laughton our
Pubs Officer is hanging up his tankard at the 2019
AGM. This is an important role so if you want to
find out more and consider helping us out please
contact him on
pubsofficer@rutlandcamra.org.uk
Our Branch is no longer the smallest in CAMRA,
we now have over 200 souls registered with us
from both sides of the A1. We have set a target to
get 250 by the end of the festival and I am sure you
will want to assist. Dave Casewell’s work has been
praised by the National Membership Committee
of CAMRA as being one of the branches with one
of the highest recruitment and retention rates in the
country. We try and make our meetings more fun
and have had whiskey tastings a quiz and magic.
We also arrange good social trips and survey
trips. Please join us by going to http://www.
camra.org.uk/join subscriptions are from as little
as £25 a year less than a pint a month.
There is a feeling that the fight to keep real ale
alive is almost won. This isn’t the case as smaller
independents are being snapped up – primarily
some cynics might say to homogenise beer
production losing the vital, unique properties of
beer created by skilled dedicated people to offer
a truly local product. CAMRA must not lose this as
our prime function, if we aren’t careful Watney’s
Red Barrel could be back – you have been
warned!
Another of CAMRA’s objectives is to keep pubs
alive and Rutland is represented on the National
Public Affairs Committee where amidst the
minefield of acronyms we are fighting to get a
better deal for managed pubs and against the
invidious practices of some pub companies to
punish their own business partners. It’s strange
that the pubs industry penalises success by huge
rents and draconian methods of selling beer. These
costs are passed to us or the pub closes. In Rutland
we have seen this and in such a rural community
the Pub is the real hub to villages. I salute all the
licensed trade in helping us maintain a real sense
of purpose.
Enough of my ranting can I suggest you look at
our website www.rutlandcamra.org.uk for the
latest news and our events calendar if you have
something beer, cider and pub related in the area
send me a note.
The cover shot shows David Laughton – Pubs
Officer on the right with Russ Hibbitt of The
Empingham Cricket and Sccial club, Russ normally
doesn’t wear a dress‚Ķ
See you in the Summer and please keep June 27th
to 30th free.
All the best
Jon Whowell
